Film brings people and cultures alive on the screen. It is a way that neither words nor still photos can produce. Video and film are becoming the medium of the future and people with the resources or expertise are turning to this type of technology. However, there are many assumptions that affect the way we shoot as ethnographers. These assumptions affect our relationship to the people we shoot, their realities and to our prospective viewers. Some of these assumptions we are aware of, others we are not. However, the more we can bring them out into the open, the better. This way, we have more of an idea of what we are doing, and are less likely to repeat blindly the errors of the past.
